Study reveals significant differences between the financial performance of ‘too-big-to-fail’ banks and sustainable banks
Sustainable banks allocate almost twice as much of their balance sheet to lending to the real economy than the too-big-to-fail banks
Financial results over the last ten years show sustainable banks are resilient, support the real economy, and provide stable returns.
A study comparing key financial information about the world’s biggest banks, or Global Systemically Important Financial Institutions (GSIFIs), and a group of sustainable banks shows significant differences.
The report, which examines the performance of banks over the last decade (2002-2011) shows that dominant big banks lend less, attract less deposits and have a weaker capital base than sustainable banks. The study conducted by The Global Alliance of Banking on Values (GABV), reveals that sustainable banks are both investing more in a greener and fairer society, and their business model is more robust and resilient. BRAC Bank Limited and BRAC Microfinance Programme are the only member from South East Asia to the global alliance.
Tier 1 Capital/Risk Weighted Assets
Return on Equity
The Global Alliance of Banking on Values (GABV), an independent network of 20 of the world’s leading sustainable banks, believe the results of the study demonstrate the strength of values-based banks in this unique comparison. They are calling on politicians and regulators to use the sustainable banking model as an important reference point for making the banking system more resilient and to ensure it serves the real economy.
Peter Blom, Chair of the GABV and CEO of Triodos Bank: “This study is crucial because it highlights the fact that the banks that dominate the current banking system have relatively low levels of lending to the real economy and relatively low capital positions.
“Sustainable banks haven’t developed their banking models because of regulations. They operate a different business model because of their values-based approach. The evidence now shows that this approach means a commitment to the real economy, a demonstrable resilience, and steady and reasonable returns.”
Mr. Syed Mahbubur Rahman, Managing Director & CEO, BRAC Bank Limited, also a delegate to the conference, said, “In line with our philosophy of People, Planet and Profit, we, at BRAC Bank, focus on meeting financial needs of small entrepreneurs at grassroots level, who were missed out in traditional banking system, for their financial inclusion. After this remarkable performance of sustainable banks comparing to world’s biggest banks we hope more banks will adopt sustainable banking practices to serve people, community and environment.”
Thomas Jorberg, member of the GABV Steering Committee and CEO of GLS Bank: “For some time sustainable banks have quietly gone about their business, focusing on financing the real economy and adopting a prudent approach to their capital position, precisely because they view profit as a means to an end, not an end in itself.
“This new study is crucial, because it exposes how the world’s biggest banks have disconnected from the real economy. Regulators have a chance to learn from these findings and move the banking industry on to a surer, fairer footing. We call on them to take it.”
The study also revealed marked differences in growth between both groups, with the sustainable banks growing significantly faster than the GSIFIs.
Compound Annual Growth Rates (CAGRs)
The Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV) released the ‘Strong and Straightforward: The Business Case for Sustainable Banking’ report today, comparing the financial performance of 22 sustainable banks, and 28 of the world’s Globally Systemically Important Financial Institutions (GISIFs) between 2002 and 2011.
Developing this analysis required the gathering of substantial financial information from a variety of public and private sources. The sustainable banks were asked to validate the publicly available information used in the study. Publicly available annual reports were gathered for the GSIFIs.

Businesses usually move cautiously at the beginning of a new year in view of any policy change. This year, however, demand for credit is remarkably high especially from SME businesses, which is the lifeblood of the economy.
In spite of liquidity and other financial pressure, BRAC Bank, the largest SME bank in the country, has achieved the highest disbursement of Tk. 3430 million in January this year compared to corresponding period of previous years which signals a vibrant SME business in 2012.
Last year, BRAC Bank broke all its' previous SME disbursement records in a single month and posted the highest gross disbursement of Tk. 4630 million in October, 2011. This historical disbursement resulted in a net growth of BBL's SME Asset portfolio by BDT 2120 million, which itself is another record for private commercial banks doing SME Business. Now the bank's SME Banking asset portfolio stands at Tk. 44,314 million.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman recently at a program said that SME finance accounted for 20% of total bank lending last year. This shows that access to credit to smaller firms has started easing. SME sector is the largest source of domestic employment.
Mr. Syed Mahbubur Rahman, Managing Director & CEO of BRAC Bank, "As a SME bank, we always try to expand our SME portfolio to reach more unbanked entrepreneurs in rural areas. We have seen phenomenal growth in SME credit last year. We are happy that it helps national economy to rebound strongly. We will put up all-out effort to do better this year in SME front."
Infusion of fresh fund in country's SME sector helps put economy in strong footing. Industrial and business expansion is creating employment and helping the economy shake off strains. At a time of liquidity pressure, BRAC Bank continues to expand its SME portfolio, which is 50% of its total portfolio, reaching more investors and covering more areas, he continues.
Bangladesh Bank has drawn up a number of initiatives to facilitate SME sector in the country. Bangladesh Bank is supporting SME sector under refinancing facility that provides low cost fund to banks for SME sector. The central bank also formulated elaborate guidelines to facilitate SME financing.
Till date, BRAC Bank has disbursed more than Tk 182,667 million to 376,350 SME entrepreneurs mostly in rural areas generating 1.2 million employments there. With these efforts, the name of BRAC Bank now goes with small and medium business in the country.
